Could new FCC regulations threaten Christian Radio?
By oneaustin • Mar 8th, 2008 • Category: Featured, NewsMany of us take for granted the Christian programming an music available on local stations. The FCC has proposed new regulations that, though not specifically directed at Christian stations, could have significant impact on these stations.
Some of the changes that could affect Christian stations are:
- Community Advisory Boards - Quarterly board meetings comprised of members from all segments of the community to determin local issues and topics that should be addressed in the programming.
- Remote Station Operation - Would require a physical presence at each broadcasting location and possibly require a percentage of programming to be local. Most Christian stations are on small budgets and most music and content are syndicated from a main studio. They often have automated broadcasting locations that re-transmit programming from the main studio to increase coverage area with minimal cost. This regulation could greatly increase the cost of running some stations.
- Public Involvement In Renewal Proceedings - Would require a level of public approval to renew a stations license.
Each of the items on the proposal seem harmless in themselves, but opponents of the regulations are concerned that along with significantly increasing costs of running a station, a well organized atheist group could have control over programming or licensing.
